One of the most exciting parts of a fishing charter in Niigata is not only catching fish, but also bringing that fresh catch home.
For many visitors, especially first-time guests and international travelers, the question comes after the catch: What should I do with the fish? Can I take it back to my hotel? Can it be packed with ice? Is delivery possible within Japan?
This guide explains what to expect when you catch fish on a Niigata fishing charter, how to prepare for take-home support, and what to ask before booking.
See our English charter page for beginner-friendly private fishing, access, safety, and catch take-home support.
Private Fishing Charter in Niigata, Japan
Why taking your catch home is part of the experience

Fishing on the Sea of Japan is different from simply buying seafood at a market. When you catch the fish yourself, the meal becomes part of your travel memory.
You remember the boat ride, the sound of the reel, the first bite, the captain’s advice, and the moment the fish comes on board. Taking the fish home lets you continue that experience after the charter.
For families, couples, and private groups, this can be one of the most memorable parts of a trip to Niigata.
Can beginners take fish home?
Yes. Beginners can ask about taking fish home, but it is important to plan before the trip.
Many first-time guests do not have a cooler box, do not know how to store fresh fish, or are staying at a hotel where cooking is not possible. That is completely normal. If you are not sure what to do with your catch, please tell us before booking.
Depending on the trip, season, fish type, and your travel plan, we can discuss ice, simple fish handling, packing, and domestic delivery options within Japan.
What kind of fish might you catch?
The target fish depends on the season and sea conditions. On Showa Maru, fishing styles may include tai-rubber, light jigging, night fishing for horse mackerel and squid, or seasonal offshore fishing.
Depending on the season, guests may have a chance to catch fish such as red sea bream, rockfish, yellowtail, horse mackerel, squid, or other local Japan Sea fish.
Please remember that fishing is a natural activity. A catch cannot be guaranteed. Weather, tide, water temperature, and fish movement all affect the result.
Tell us your take-home plan before booking
If you want to take fish home, please tell us when you make your inquiry.
Useful details include:
- Where you will stay after the fishing trip
- Whether you have a cooler box
- Whether you will travel by car, train, or taxi
- Whether you can cook fish at your accommodation
- Whether you want to discuss domestic delivery within Japan
- Whether you are traveling the same day or staying overnight nearby
This helps us recommend a realistic option for your schedule.
Option 1: Bring a cooler box and take the fish yourself
The simplest option is to bring a cooler box and take the fish with you after returning to port.
This works best if you are traveling by car or rental car. You can keep the fish cold with ice and carry it to your home, hotel, or next destination in Japan.
If you are traveling by train with luggage, this option may be less convenient. Fish can be heavy, wet, and difficult to carry without proper packing.
Option 2: Ask about ice and simple fish handling
Fresh fish should be kept cold after being caught. Ice and basic fish handling are important for quality and safety.
Depending on the situation, you can ask about ice, cooling, and simple handling after the trip. Please ask in advance so we can explain what is possible for your plan.
If you are not used to handling fish, do not worry. Many beginner guests have the same concern.
Option 3: Ask about packing and domestic delivery
For guests traveling within Japan, domestic cool delivery may be possible depending on the fish, timing, packing condition, and delivery service rules.
Cool delivery services have their own size, weight, temperature, and packing requirements. For example, Yamato Transport explains that refrigerated and frozen delivery require proper pre-cooling, and cool delivery does not cool or freeze items after pickup.
Because rules and availability can change, please ask us before the trip if you want to discuss delivery. We will confirm what is realistic for your date and catch.

Can fresh fish be shipped overseas?
In most cases, fresh fish caught on a charter should not be treated as something you can easily ship overseas.
International shipping of fresh food can involve customs rules, quarantine rules, temperature control, and carrier restrictions. If you are visiting Japan from overseas, we recommend enjoying your catch while you are still in Japan or arranging domestic delivery to a place within Japan when possible.
Please do not assume that fresh fish can be sent to your home country.
Can you eat the fish at a restaurant?
Some guests want to catch fish and eat it during their trip. This can be a wonderful experience, but it must be arranged properly.
Showa Maru does not cook or serve meals on the boat. If you want to eat your catch at a restaurant, please ask in advance. Restaurant service must be provided by a licensed restaurant, and arrangements depend on availability, fish condition, timing, and the restaurant’s rules.
If this is important to your travel plan, tell us before booking so we can discuss realistic options.
What if you cannot take the fish home?
If you cannot take fish home, please talk with the captain. Depending on the situation, there may be other ways to handle the catch responsibly.
Before your trip, think about what you want to do if you catch more fish than expected. A private charter can be exciting, but the best experience comes when you have a plan for after the fishing.
